Rapana Thomasiana (mollusk from the Black Sea)

Rapana Thomasiana - gastropod mollusk - originated in the Japanese Sea. It has a globes (rounded) shell, with a very short-spire and large body whorl. The color varies from light yellow to reddish-brown, with dark brown dashes on the spiral ribs. A diagnostic feature for this species is its wide aperture and the deep orange color inside. Rapana whelks can reach 180 mm.
The history of Rapana thomasiana in the Black Sea is not old (the first being recorded in 1946). It is believed that the mollusk was introduced into the Black Sea by a ship carrying its eggs attached to the hull. Rapana perfectly adapted to its new environment, reproduced and became widespread.
Rapana meat is very tasty, health-giving and is of great biological value. It is a highly ferment active product, that has a wholesome effect on the entire organism. Especially highlighted is the influence of Rapana on the male organism, in particular on the generation of the hormones that effect potency. Like the majority of sea delicacies Rapana contains big quantity of mineral elements (iodine, phosphorus, potassium, iron) that are easily assimilated by the organism.
Our company starts this year the Rapana Project, aiming to extract, process and export Rapana Thomasiana (Rapana Black Sea) meat. The extraction of Rapana will be conducted on the Black Sea shelf, in its south - east part. Meat of cooked and frozen in a slab refrigerator (rapid freezing (- 49°C)) Rapana is packaged in polyethylene packages from 0,25 up to 8,0 kg in each, packed in crimped-cardboard boxes and then transported in the refrigerator-containers (-18°C) by sea. Due to the biological mollusk life cycle, the extraction of Rapana is seasonal and is realized in the period from April till October.
